Launa Rohar received her B.A. in music from the University of Washington, followed by graduate work in flute performance and music education at Oregon State University. She has studied under well-known flutists: Janet Ferguson, Felix Skowronek, Karla Flygare, Merrie Siegel, and Sandra Saathoff. She has also played in master classes with Julius Baker, Carol Wincenc, and John Barcelona.
Launa brings 15 years of wide ranging teaching experience to Kaleidoscope School of Music. She began her teaching career while at the University of Washington. At Oregon State University, she taught undergraduate flute studies as a Graduate Teaching Assistant. Launa has served on faculty at the Albany Conservatory of Music and Wyoming Fine Arts Center. In addition, she taught several years in her private studio located in Tacoma, Washington.
Launa is committed to flute pedagogy and teaching excellence! She draws upon different teaching methods, such as Suzuki, Kodaly, and Dalcroze Eurithymics. In 2005, she developed a curriculum for young students, “Penny Whistle to Flute!”. Launa enjoys teaching a spectrum of ages and levels.
As a soloist, Launa was a twice winner of the Abbotsford International Solo Competition and the WMEA, Commencement Bay Region, Solo and Ensemble Contest. She has appeared in recital throughout the Northwest, Midwest and Canada. Launa enjoys orchestral playing above all else. She held principal flute positions in the Corvallis Symphony Orchestra, Tacoma Community Orchestra and Marrowstone Music Festival. Additionally, she held second flute/piccolo position in the White Water Opera Company and Orchestra Seattle. Presently, Launa performs with the Mercer Island Baroque Orchestra and the Mercer Island Classical Trio. She is a member of the National Flute Association and the Seattle Flute Society.
